History Of the Association
The Oklahoma Territory was opened to white settlement at the end of the nineteenth century. Among those first settlers were Baptists, who established churches and sought to advance the kingdom of God in the Territory and beyond. One source suggests an association of churches was formed in Western Oklahoma Territory as early as November 1901. Another source suggests that the Concord Baptist Association was established in 1914. There is no documentation to explain the precise reason that the name Concord was chosen, but history reveals that the term Concord was used frequently by Baptist Churches and Associations since the beginning of our nation and was very popular in the late 1880's. The name is used to this day by associations in Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia. Thus, it is most probable, in view of the newly established peace with Native Americans, and to promote harmony with them, the name Concord was added to chart the way for ministry for the Baptists’ mission in the newly formed State.
The churches of Kiowa Baptist Association, which organized in 1902 in Hobart, consisting of ten churches and 286 members, merged with Concord Baptist Association on August 31, 1927, producing the Concord-Kiowa Missionary Baptist Association, consisting of twenty-six churches in Custer, Washita, and Kiowa counties. One church in Dewey County, First Baptist Church in Taloga joined the Association to its south because no bridge existed over the Canadian River, cutting them off from fellowship with Northwest Baptist Association.
